Poor response to second-home tax

I blogged earlier this month here about the €200 tax on second homes. Today is the final day for payment of this tax. According to RTE, only €15 million has been collected to date. That's 75,000 houses out of a potential 200,000.

Anyone eligible who doesn't pay this faces penalties.

Not surprising that people have not paid We were happy to boast at dinner parties about these properties but paying tax is a different matter. It is interesting the interest/fine if you don't pay. €20 per month.

Hi Shane,

Thanks for the comment.

I was chatting to a client recently who owns several rented properties and in conversation I reminded her of this tax charge. She advised that she hadn't yet paid it as she hadn't received any bill or notification. I know her well enough to know that she was genuine about this and not just acting stupid for her own ends.

It occurs to me that NPPR need to engage in a bit more publicity to remind people that this is a self-assessment tax of sorts, i.e. you won't be receiving any bills - if you have a second or more properties, it's up to YOU to pay up voluntarily.

Out of curiosity, what is it that you find interesting about the interest/fine for non-payment - too little?

Regards, Liam
